Top 11 plugins that all WordPress websites should have on them. Keep in mind that this is my opinion on these plugins other opinions may vary.

AntiSpamBee — ( 3 slides here) http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/antispam-bee/

  1. Simple in its function,
  2. You can filter by county to eliminate the places where a lot of spam originates and it uses honey pot data to eliminate spammers
  3. You can review your comments if you like when it is marked as spam to help eliminate false positives

Count-Per-Day http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/count-per-day/
This is a quick states program that gives you some insight into your site traffic without having to go elsewhere.

DB Cache Reloaded Fix http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/db-cache-reloaded-fix/
The biggest overhead for WordPress is the number of DB queries to MySql and There are dozens of caching plugins that will solve your problem, this plugin is a lightweight one that does one thing and caches the DB queries and actually speeds up your website.

Faster Image Insert http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/faster-image-insert/
While WordPress 3.5 has given us a better media manager and uploader sometimes you just want it to be even easier. This plugin places a new box right under your posts content. this saves you some time as well as making it easy to manage the media tied to to current post.

Google Analyticator http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-analyticator/
One of the most popular analytics program and this brings it right to your dashboard, now some say well simply add the code direct to your theme, well what if you change themes you lose that code. This keeps your google analytics alive.

Gravity Forms http://wppro.ca/gravityform
Now while this plugin is a premium plugin and not free I recommend over Contact Forms 7 which is the most popular simply because it is free. The forms you can create with Gravity forms goes well beyond just your standard contact us form. You can integrate the forms with ecommerce stores such as WooCommerce and WP-Ecommerce and more. It builds multipage forms and even has paypal integration built in so you can create online order forms for simple products or courses.

iRobots.txt SEO — (2 slides here) http://wppluginsatoz.com/download/irobots.txt-seo/

  1. A robots text file is important because it is the number 1 reason for 404 errors and you can either create one manually or do it automatically as this plugin offers.
  2. It has easy setup and allows for complete customization of the file.

SEO Smart Links http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/seo-automatic-links/
Internal linking for your website is as import and may even be more important than external links to not only SEO but your visitors. This plugin makes the job easy and automatic, you can also add custom keywords for linking internally.

WordFence http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordfence/
This security plugin runs a regular scan on your files looking for any issues you may have it also look for plugins that need updating and notifies you of any issues via email. It also run a comparison of all your core files and plugin file with those in the repository and lets you know if there are any differences in them.

WordPress File Monitor Plus http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-file-monitor-plus/
This security plugin watches every file and folder on your site and tells you via email or when you login when something has been added or changed. This plugin has been one of my saviors because there has been a time when i was fighting a hacker live on a site as fast as i was fixing it he was adding and changing files in different area. By using the manual scan I was able to find track and kill his back door.

WordPress SEO —(3 slides here) http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-seo/

About John Overall

John Overall
JohnOverall.com
John Overall has been working online since 1995 since just before the introduction of the first web browser. In 1999, he opened his web design and hosting business, which by chance was the same year that Google came on the scene and the internet, was heating up. For the last 10 years, he has been doing web design and hosting and since early 2009, he has been focusing on WordPress as a platform for people to deliver their messages to the world. After receiving numerous questions from clients about how to use WordPress, John developed introductory and advanced courses on how to use WordPress and teaches it at Shoreline Community School in Victoria.
With a focus on WordPress, he looks for ways to bring more people into the fold and begin using WordPress to maximize their websites impact.
With this also came a need to educate people about Social Media and it great uses and pitfalls. Which includes explaining to people what social media is? Why social media is becoming such a prevalent tool in our society? How marketers, businesses and other professionals use social media today. Including some of the important privacy issues involved in using social media websites. In addition, educating people about knowing what you should and should not put online. And hoping to help people avoid getting caught in any scams from social media.
John spends his spare time with his two young sons, and getting out hiking whenever he can preferably in the Sooke hills.
